Strategies:
98 Slayer is required to kill. In order to access where the dragons can be found, you will need to complete the Hard Karamja Achievements and either be on task or pay a fee - See the Gemstone dragon dungeon page for more information on this fee.
Onyx dragons primarily fight using Magic. These dragons also have a special attack wherein they will spit gems at you - this will affect a 3x3 area around where you are standing when it hits. This attack is easy enough to avoid by watching for the animation of a projectile flying toward you; farther away makes it easier to avoid as you have more time to react. Should you fail to move soon enough and get hit by this special attack, you will be damaged and the dragon will heal 5,000. If you are co-opping, your partner cannot be hit by your special attack projectile and if the dragon dies before the special lands, you will not be damaged.
Some sources indicate that you can avoid them using their special attack by standing extremely close to the dragon. Considering the ease of avoiding the attack, it seems strange to take on Melee damage just to stop its occurrence, however, it is still an option if you should choose.
