If you talk to The Map before fighting him, you'll learn that he was part of a group of trolls heading to a human settlement until they got lost because The Map ate their map, suggesting he was a baby at the time as trolls are named after the first thing they try to eat. As a result, he's been on the plateau for a long time and had to eat his fellow trolls, who may or not may have been alive at the time, to survive.
The Map is the 'boss' monster of the Death Plateau quest, however he should pose no threat to anyone but new RuneScape players and can be killed very quickly.
