Several other useful tools for Farming include:
- Amulet of Nature - Allows you to assign it to a farming patch by "using" it with the patch. When worn, it will 'hum' and let you know once your patch has become fully grown, diseased, or dead. If you wear the amulet while harvesting your allotments, you will also receive a greater yield of crops. Please note that this effect does not stack with Magic secateurs. You can only have one Amulet of Nature at a time and it can only be assigned to one patch at any time.
- Amulet of Farming - A slightly less powerful version of the Amulet of Nature. It can only be bound to one allotment or flower patch of your choice. Just like the Amulet of Nature, it will 'hum' to let you know if your patch has fully grown, diseased, or dead. You can purchase this from any farming shop for a small fee of 200 Coins. Please be aware that anytime you rub the amulet to check the status of your plants, it will use up one charge. The Amulet of Farming has a maximum of 8 charges and once they are used up, the amulet will disintegrate.
- Scroll of life - Costs 10k Dungeoneering tokens and requires 25 Dungeoneering/Farming to use it. Once used, you gain a permanent effect that when you clear any farming patches, you have a 10% chance of receiving a random seed back and a 5% chance of getting a random tree seed back from a dead tree.
- Amulet of bountiful harvest - An amulet worn to provide you with a chance of saving seeds when planting in an Allotment patch.
- Summoning familiars
- Giant ent pouch - Allows you to potentially double your harvest for Cacti, Fruit trees, Berries, and Cave nightshade. Note that experience will not be increased.
- Wolpertinger pouch - Doubles harvest produce and the experience gained from bushes.
- Giant ent pouch - Allows you to potentially double your harvest for Cacti, Fruit trees, Berries, and Cave nightshade. Note that experience will not be increased.
- Wilderness sword 1 - Provides you with unlimited teleports to the Bloodweed patch located in the Wilderness.
- Tirannwn quiver 2 - Gives you an extra mushroom patch, South West of the Tirannwn. It also allows you to teleport there and to Lletya an unlimited number of times.
- Morytania Legs
- Falador Shield
- Shield 2 - Gives about 10% more Farming experience when growing/harvesting crops at the allotment south of Falador
- Shield 3 - grants you the ability to trade Mole claws and Mole skins for White lily seeds from Wyson the gardener. You MUST be wearing the shield to get this option.
- Shield 2 - Gives about 10% more Farming experience when growing/harvesting crops at the allotment south of Falador
- Farming cape - Provides the perk where you may instantly harvest the rest of your patch. Cape can be used on the Max Cape, Completionist cape, or Completionist cape (t) to add the perk to those capes to wear while farming instead.
- Skill Outfits - There are 6 different skill outfits that can be obtained. Equiping all 5 pieces of any one set will enable you to obtain 6% more experience when Farming (1% per piece and an extra 1% set bonus). Of these sets, the best one is the Master farmer outfit which is created by combining the Animal, Crop, and Tree farmer outfits. This set also provides several perks on top of the experience.
- Urns - Use of Cracked, Fragile, Plain, Strong, or Decorated farming urn will enable you to obtain clippings from your crops to help you obtain more experience.
- Juju farming potion - Consumed to provide you with additional produce harvested. Experience will not be gained with additional items.
- Miraculous treatment - Used to revive a dead farming patch (excluding trees).
- Herb protector - Used on an herb patch to guarantee the crop will not become diseased or die.
- Patch bomb - Used to instantly harvest and note any patch, excluding the potato patch in Taverley.
- Greater runic staff - Can be charged with the Remote Farm and/or Fertile soil spells to help save inventory space.
While not a tool, it is worth noting that after completion of A Fairy Tale III - Battle at Ork's Rift, you can talk to any farmer across Gielinor to turn on/off the ability of your patches to always be weeded. This is a great ability to have because it disposes of the need to carry a Rake around while farming and reduces the time spent farming in general.
There are several possible methods used to obtain seeds. The best method to use is whichever one you prefer, however, it is best to keep in mind that some methods (ie using Bird nest) may take more time than others.
- Kill Monsters*
- Harvest items (Cabbage, Potato, Onion, etc) from farms and you will occasionally get a seed. Harvesting planted Arc berries will ALWAYS provide you with seeds, however, only for the type of berry harvested unless you are crossbreeding 2 different seeds.
- Opening a Bird nest, often obtained via Woodcutting or from Kingdom of Miscellania. Odds to obtain are increased with use of Woodcutting cape and (Superior) Log-splitting scrimshaw.
- Run favors for the Wise Old Man in Draynor Village.
- Play Vinesweeper. See Vinesweeper section for more information.
- Purchase from the Grand Exchange
- Thieving
- Seed stalls at Draynor Village - Level 27

* Keep in mind that specific monsters drop specific seeds. Be sure to check the item page for the type of seed you want to obtain for a list of what monsters drop it.
There are 2 ways to plant seeds depending upon what type of seed you are growing.
- Allotment, Flower, Hops, Herbs, Bushes, & Special
- Click on the patch you wish to Farm in to start clearing it of Weeds.
Tip: Save the Weeds you get to help make your own compost. - Once clear, use a Compost/Supercompost/Ultracompost on the weeded patch to fertilize it. Note that this step is suggested, not required! Alternatively, you can cast the Fertile Soil spell if you have unlocked it.
- Use the seed(s) you are planting on the weeded/fertilized patch. Depending on the type of crops you are growing, you can either plant a certain flower (or place a Scarecrow in the nearby flower patch) or you can pay the local gardener to look over your crops if one is present.
- Water your planted crop if necessary then wait for it to grow.
- Click on the patch you wish to Farm in to start clearing it of Weeds.
- Fruit trees & Wood trees
- Obtain a Plant pot by either purchasing one from a Farming Shop or by using a Plant pot (empty) on an empty (weeded) farming patch; a Gardening trowel must either be carried or on your toolbelt to fill it with soil.
- While holding onto the Gardening trowel (inventory or toolbelt), use the tree seed on the Plant pot.
- Water your new seedling so it can grow.
Tip: It will grow to a sapling faster while sitting inside your bank. - When you have obtained a sapling, click on the patch you wish to farm in to start clearing it of Weeds.
- Use your sapling on the weeded/fertilized patch. You MUST be carrying a Spade in your inventory or toolbelt or it will not plant. If there is a local gardener, you can pay them to look over your tree while it grows.
- Wait for it to grow.
- Obtain a Plant pot by either purchasing one from a Farming Shop or by using a Plant pot (empty) on an empty (weeded) farming patch; a Gardening trowel must either be carried or on your toolbelt to fill it with soil.
Throughout Gielinor there are many Farming patches wherein your seeds can be planted. Some patches come in groups such as the case with many Allotment, Flower, and Herb patches. Others are single patches long distances from others, such as with some of the Special Seeds.

For patch type specific map locations, please see our Farming Patches Map.
In addition to simply tossing your seeds into a patch, there are several features which can enhance your Farming abilities. Some of these perks are 1 time use while others have longer lasting effects.
The first perk we will discuss is protection. While you do not HAVE to water your plants, not doing so makes them more prone to catch diseases and die unless you cure them. Curing plants can be done with either a Cure potion or by casting the Cure Plant spell while they are diseased. Once your plant dies, it can only be revived by using a Miraculous treatment or use of the Farmer's Catalyst fragment (for dead herb patches only) to obtain Shadow-infused herbs. There are three ways you can avoid disease:
- Stand around and water the plants when required.
- Plant specific items/plants near by.
- Hire a local gardener to look over your crops.
Since standing around watching your plants grow is not an effective farming method and healing them takes resources, it is generally best to protect your plants instead. This can be done by planting one of the following items in a nearby Flower patch to prevent them from becoming diseased in the first place.
Do NOT pick the flower when it has fully grown. You will need to leave it in the patch for the effect to work.
Item | Level to Plant | Protects |
Marigold | 2 | Potato, Tomato, and Onion |
Rosemary | 11 | Cabbage |
Scarecrow | 23 | Sweetcorn |
Nasturtium | 24 | Watermelon |
White lily | 52 | All neighboring fruit/vegetables |
As a general rule, ALWAYS use some version of compost. This is because all composts decrease the chance that your crop will become diseased, increase your harvest, and provide a small amount of experience when used - the extent to which your compost will do each of these things varies depending on its tier. In addition to these features, using Ultracompost when you have either the tier 1 or tier 2 "Dragon Ultra Combo" totem perk active provides a 1/1,000 or 1/750 chance, respectively, to obtain a Starved ancient effigy.
The general how to process for all 3 of the Compost types are identical, the only differance is the items used in the creation of your compost. Note that if you fill the compost bin up with only Tomatoes, it will make Rotten tomatoes, not compost. If you wish to use Tomatoes, use some Weeds or something else as well.
To make compost...
- Take the items you wish to compost to your desired compost bin. You will need 15 items in total; these items will vary depending on if you are making Regular, Super, or Ultra compost. Compost bins can be found near most Allotment patches, see our Farming Patches Map for a list of locations.
- Use the items on the bin to fill it completely, close the lid, and let it decompose for about 35-90 minutes. The type of compost you are creating will determine how long it takes. Regular compost is 35-50 minutes while Super and Ultra composts take about 90 minutes.
- You will be able to tell when the compost is done by trying to open the bin. If the compost is not finished, it will tell you so and not let you open it. Once it is complete, it can be opened and emptied.
- To empty the bin, you will need Empty buckets. The compost bin does not need to be completely emptied, though it is suggested to do that so you can begin making more. Examining the bin will tell you how many doses remain.
As 15 items are placed in the compost bin to decay, you will be able to withdraw 15 buckets worth of compost. Note that having the tier 1 or tier 2 "Bully for You" totem perk active will give you a 1/5 or 1/3 chance, respectively, to not deplete your compost bin when collecting buckets. This means that it is possible to collect more than 15. Once collected, the buckets of compost can be stored with a Tool leprechaun, banked, used, or sold as desired.
The sections below detail the items that are used to create each type of compost. Keep in mind that failure to use items from the correct categoty will result in a different type of compost. For example, using 14 Pineapple and 1 Weeds will not make Supercompost, it will create Compost. Note that if you attempt to use an improper item for the compost you are currently creating, you will receive a warning before the item is added to the bin. If you are ever not sure what type of compost an item will make, you can use it on the nearby farmer to find out.
Regular Compost is the lowest tier compost that can be created. Failure to use the proper ingredients for either of the other types of compost will result in creation of this compost. Collecting Compost from a compost bin will earn you 4.5 experience and using it on a farming plot will earn 18 experience. Items that will create Compost include:
Cabbage | Fevergrass | Flax | Lavender
Leaves | Manure | Onion | Primweed
Raw Potato | Stinkbloom | Sweetcorn | Tansymum
Weeds |
Supercompost is the second tier compost that can be created. Failure to use the proper ingredients for this item will result in creation of Compost. Collecting Supercompost from a compost bin will earn you 8.5 experience and using it on a farming plot will earn 26 experience. Items that will create Supercompost include:
Calquat fruit | Coconut shell | Grapes of Guthix | Green manure
Maple roots | Oak roots | Peach | Pineapple
Pungent vine | Watermelon | White tree fruit | Willow roots |
Alternatively, one can create a bin of regular Compost and turn it into Supercompost by using a dose of Compost potion on it.
Of the ingredients listed above, Pineapples are by far the easiest to obtain in large quantities.
- You can purchase up to 40 from Arhein per day at 2 Coins each.
- Once you have completed the Easy Karamja Achievements, you can collect 40 noted Pineapples from Dell Monti daily.
- You can use the Fruitfall scroll in conjunction with a Fruit bat to spawn several types of fruit, including Pineapples.
- There are also several Pineapple plants near the Karamja lodestone; each plant produces 5 Pineapples before becoming depleted.
Ultracompost is the highest tier compost that can be created. Failure to use the proper ingredients for this item will result in creation of Compost. Collecting Ultracompost from a compost bin will earn you 12.5 experience and using it on a farming plot will earn 34 experience. Unlike the other types of compost, Ultracompost can only be made with 1 ingredient: Dragon manure.
As use of Compost only decreases the chance of your crops becoming diseased, some crops require more drastic measures to completely prevent disease. This can be accomplished by hiring a local gardener to watch over your crops, but they won't do this for free. Each type of crop requires a different payment for its care - this price will be the same for all farmers. To quickly discover what they want to watch your crops, you can Right click your growing plants and "Inspect" them or you can reference the tables below.
Note: Payments can be noted!

Tool leprechauns are like gardeners in that they can be found by many different patches. Unlike gardeners though, Tool leprechauns provide several functions. These include:
- Teleporting you to Vinesweeper
- Noting produce for you
- Storing various Farming tools
- Treating patches with compost
Teleport
It is possible to get transportation to Vinesweeper from any Tool leprechaun (excluding the one on Harmony Island) simply by Right clicking them and choosing the "teleport" option. Using the portal at Vinesweeper to leave will return you to the patch you were at before. For a brief description of the activity, see the Vinesweeper section below and for more details see the Vinesweeper guide itself.
Noting
As mentioned above, Tool leprechauns can note your harvested produce. This can be done easily, and at no charge, by using the item on them. Be aware that they will not note your logs (seems to be some discrepancy if you grew them or not), nor will they note Cave nightshade, and the Tool leprechaun at the farm between Port Sarim and Falador will not note Cabbage.
Storage
To store your tools, you can Left click the Tool leprechaun or Right click them and choose "Exchange" to open the storage interface.
Once opened, you can simply Left click on the item you wish to store/remove or you can Right click to select how many you wish to exchange and if you want withdrawn items to be noted. Be aware that Tool leprechauns can only store certain Farming tools. In addition to this, items that have a magic variant (Magic secateurs & Magic watering can) will only allow you to store either that variant OR the normal one, Secateurs & Watering can respectively.
Note that storage is universal across all Tool leprechauns, you do not need to store items with each individual one. For their locations, please see the Tool leprechaun page. Items that can be stored with them include:
Tools | Supplies | |||
Item | Maximum | Item | Maximum
Rake | 1 | Empty bucket | 255 | |
Seed dibber | 1 | Compost | 255
Spade | 1 | Supercompost | 2,000
Gardening trowel | 1 | Ultracompost | 2,000
(Magic) Secateurs* | 1 | Plant cure | 255
(Magic) Watering can* | 1 | Scarecrow | 5
Plank | 255 | |||
Miraculous treatment | 2,000 |
* Magic variants require completion of A Fairy Tale I - Growing Pains (Magic secateurs) and A Fairy Tale III - Battle at Ork's Rift (Magic watering can)
Since the addition of the toolbelt, it is no longer necessary to store your tools with a Tool leprechaun as those items can now be added to your toolbelt. Despite this fact, it is still suggested to store a set of tools here incase you encounter a situation where a toolbelted item will not work. This will allow you to save several spaces in your bank and make it so you will not need to purchase these items whenever you need them.
Treatments
For a fee, Tool leprechauns can automatically add compost to your weeded patches. In order for this to work, you must preemptively pay them for this service and have the appropriate type of compost stored with them; you can pay for up to 60,000 treatments. Costs are as follows:
Compost Used | Coins Per Use |
Compost | 500 |
Supercompost | 1,500 |
Ultracompost | 2,500 |
You will be notified when the last bucket of compost has been used. Note that the Empty bucket will be distroyed.
Seeds are what you plant in patches to train the Farming skill. There are 12 of types of seeds. They are:
- Allotment seeds
- Bush seeds
- Cactus seeds
- Flower seeds
- Fruit Tree seeds
- Herb seeds
- Hops seeds
- Mushroom seeds
- Tree seeds
- Special seeds
- Herblore Habitat seeds
- Arc seeds
The sections below give the basic information about the seeds within each category. For more information about any given seed or its produce, please see the item entry.
Allotment seeds can be planted within Allotment patches only. In order to grow these plants, you will need 3 of any given seed to be planted within the patch. Once harvested, the patch will be clear and you will need to plant another batch of seeds.
Note that Megavegetation can only be harvested if you consume a dose of Harvest potion prior to harvesting them. The experiences for planting and harvesting will remain the same when Megavegetation is harvested instead of normal. The only difference is the produce collected.

Tree seeds can be planted within Tree patches only. In order to grow these plants, you will need 1 of any given seed to be planted within a Plant pot to create a seedling (Exp:1), then watered to become a sapling (Exp: 1), finally to be planted within the patch. If left alone after cutting it down, trees will regrow and can be chopped down once again. Alternatively, the stump can be cleared, most trees will provide you with their root, and another sapling can be planted.

Upon completion of Back to My Roots, you will receive a Jade vine seed. You can take this seed to Lord Handelmort's Mansion Garden and plant it in the special Jade vine patch there. If you wish to have Horacio the Gardener look after your Jade vine, simply pay him 10 Wildblood hops. If your plant dies, you can get another seed for free from Horacio.
Once your vine is fully grown, you can choose to prune it to gain Farming experience or you can leave it alone to become a Wild jade vine. You can kill it once every 24 hours if you let it go wild. To fight the Jade vine, you will need:
- Decent armor
- Good food (depending upon your level)
- Woodcutting hatchet - toolbelt hatchet can be used, however, you MUST wield a Melee weapon
- Secateurs - toolbelt and/or Magic secateurs can be used
- Antipoison
Upon fighting the Wild jade vine, it would be advised to turn on Protect from Melee. The vine uses two types of attacks: Melee and Magic. You will see the Melee attack more than Magic, so don't fret. You MUST attack it with a hatchet/melee weapon or you won't do any damage.
When you have successfully chopped the wild vine down, you can now finish it off by cutting the root. Once that is done, you will receive 2,500 Slayer experience and can ask Horacio for another seed to plant again.
The Livid Farm is located North of the bank on Lunar Isle. The Livid Farm is a great way to train Magic, Farming, Agility, Crafting, and Construction. To begin helping out, talk to Pauline Polaris for a tutorial. After the tutorial you are ready to begin working on the farm. As you will be using Lunar magic, you will need to have this spellbook activated and have runes for each of the spells used. As you work, you will earn Produce points which you can trade to unlock verious rewards! Please see our Livid Farm guide for more details.
Vinesweeper is an activity based on the well-known game Minesweeper. Farmer Blinkin has turned his farm into a fluffy-tailed nightmare, with endless numbers of rabbits munching away at his most prized crops. As you to help him clear out the bunnies and collect the crops for him, you will earn points. These awarded points can be traded with Mrs. Winkin for seeds, supercompost potions, experience, and more flags. For more information, please see the Vinesweeper activity guide.
The Sorceress's Garden is based on Thieving experience, but it is possible to collect herbs from each of the gardens and gain 50 experience. For more information on this activity, please see our Sorceress's Garden guide.
As you progress through the Farming skill, one you reach certain thresholds, you will be able to train this skill using animals. At level 17 Farming and level 20 Construction, you will be able to begin raising animals at the Manor Farm just North of East Ardougne. See our Player-Owned Farm guide for more information.
Once you reach level 42 Farming and level 45 Construction, you will be able to begin raising animals at the Ranch Out of Time on an island West of Anachronia. See our Ranch Out of Time guide for more information.
