Herbs are the primary ingredient for making potions, but before you can use them, they must be cleaned. To clean an herb, simply click on it in your inventory. If your Herblore level is high enough, you will be able to clean it. If it is not high enough, you can't clean it. Once they are cleaned, the herbs will look a bit different. The following is a list of herbs available in Gielinor. Some of these herbs will not be available until you have completed Jungle Potion.
Click the herb image to learn more about it!
To first create a potion, you will need the following:
- A Vial of water or Coconut milk*
- Vial of water - use an empty vial on any water source
- Coconut milk - use an empty vial with a Coconut half
- The appropriate clean herb*
- The appropriate secondary ingredient
- High enough level to combine the ingredients
*These 2 items can be replaced by purchasing an unfinished potion from the Grand Exchange or from another player.
Once you have collected the items necessary for your potion of choice and you possess the required level, creating the potion itself can be completed in just a few easy steps:
- Use the herb with the Vial of water (or Coconut milk) to create an "Herb" potion (unf) - for example Guam potion (unf). Adding an herb to Coconut milk will instead create "Potion" (unf)
- Use the secondary ingredient with the unfinished potion to create a finished 3-dose potion
Note that base potions are ALWAYS created as 3-doses and you will skip the first step if you are using an unfinished potion.
Remember that combining different herbs and secondary ingredients will change what potion you are creating. See our chart below for the ingredients and levels necessary to mix certain potions.

At higher levels, it is possible to create potions that use one of the potions above as a "base" to create new, stronger, potions. To make them, you will need to take your base potion and add another ingredient or herb to it. Note that ALL of these potions are Members only items. These "Potions Plus" include Extreme versions. Extreme potions of course have higher bonuses than their normal counterparts, but are also untradeable.

The last thing we can do with potions above is to combing 2 or more 4-dose potions into a Crystal flask, which will create a 6-dose flask. These Combination potions can be consumed to gain the effects of all of the component potions at once.
Before you can start making any of these potions, you must buy the recipe from either Lady Meilyr or the Harmony pillar farmers in the Meilyr district. Of the 29 Combination potion recipes, only 20 of them can be purchased immediately. The remaining 9 must first be discovered by finding an "Unreadable page" while Dungeoneering before you can purchase it. Using a Consistent yak card (solo or team) will guarantee that you find recipe when you open a door while Dungeoneering; you will also not incur a penalty after your second death. In order to purchase all 29 recipes, it will cost you 19,550,000 Coins.
Note: If you have at least 115 Dungeoneering and level 95 in all skills, you can reach into the Motherlode Maw once per day for a chance to find a recipe page. Once you've found all 9, you will also have a chance of unlocking a recipe for free in level order. The Motherlode Maw is found within the Edimmu Resource dungeon in the Meilyr district.
* You must find the recipe before you can purchase
Some potions can only be made during and after certain quests; potions that cannot be made outside of quests, such the Troll potion from Eadgar's Ruse, or are basically useless outside of the quest, such as the Bravery potion from Legends' Quest, are not included here for brevity.
Powerburst potions are potions which are stronger than most and last for a shorter amount of time. Note that all powerburst potions share a 2 minute cooldown. As such, if you consume an Adrenaline potion, you will not be able to consume another dose of it or a Replenishment potion until the cooldown has passed.
While most of the potions listed below are specifically named "powerburst" and use a Powerburst vial for creation, the other potions were retroactively added to this category once the other potions were released with Herblore 120 as they had similar level of effects.

+ Requires Powerburst vial to make.
At higher levels, it is possible to use improved recipes for some of the Powerburst potions. This does not change the effect of the potion, nor the experience gained by creating it, however, it does make it require less resources (+2 variants) or less time (+1 variants) to do so. Note that all potions on this table require a Powerburst vial to make.
Bombs are potions which create a specific effect in a 3x3 area against your opponents. Note that as it is a "thrown" item and as such can fail to hit the same as other attacks; these can be used with any style of combat. Creation of these potions all require use of a Bomb vial.

Decanting is where smaller dose potions are combined to make larger ones or vials are used on larger dose potions to make them smaller. Decanting can be performed by yourself or by giving (un)noted potions to certain NPC to decant for you. It is recommended to bring noted empty vials/flasks and noted potions when using NPC to decant.
When using an NPC to decant potions, you can either speak to them and ask them to decant your potions or you can Right click them and choose the desired decanting option. NPC that can decant potions include:
Person | Location | Map | Notes |
Bob Barter (herbs) | Varrock (Grand Exchange) |
Most accessible decanter for low level players. Costs 2 Coins per Vial needed when decanting otherwise his service is free.
Teplin Macagan | Oo'glog | Requires completion of As a First Resort. Only decants Crystal flask and Potion flask. Empty flasks will not be returned and you must provide your own flasks if decanting from normal Vials to flasks.
Rhobert Dail | Prifddinas (Tower of Voices) |
Requires completion of Plague's End. Costs 2 Coins per Vial needed when decanting otherwise his service is free.
Rhodri Dail | Prifddinas (Max Guild) |
Requires completion of Plague's End and attainment of 99 in all skills. Costs 2 Coins per Vial needed when decanting otherwise his service is free.
War | Draynor Village (War's Retreat) |
In addition to decanting vials and flasks, he can decant your vials to flasks and vice versa.
Zahur | Nardah | Only decants into 1, 2, or 3 doses. Costs 2 Coins per Vial needed when decanting otherwise her service is free. |
If decanting into larger potions "by hand", you will need to use one potion on another; it does not matter which is used on the other. If decanting into smaller potions, you will need to use your potion on an empty vial/flask to do so. Note that decanting a 4-dose or 3-dose potion will always result in 1 or more 2-dose potions regardless of the number of empty flasks/vials you are using; to get any other dose amount, you will need to decant farther. For example: If you are attempting to create a 3-dose potion from a 4-dose potion, you will need your original 4-dose potion and 2 empty Vial. See the gif below to see the steps in action.
- Use your 4-dose potion on an empty vial to create two 2-dose potions.
- Use one of the 2-dose potions on an empty vial so you have two 1-dose potions and a 2-dose potion.
- Add one of the 1-dose potions to the 2-dose potion remaining from the first step; this will result in a 3-dose potion, 1-dose potion, and an empty Vial.
While Dungeoneering, you will sometimes find grimy herbs after killing creatures. You also may run across herb seeds that you will need to plant using the Farming skill. Refer to our Farming guide for more information on the required levels to grow your own herbs.
The reason herbs are important in Dungeoneering is because sometimes there are bonus rooms in the dungeons that have requirements above your normal skill level. You will need to make potions to boost up your levels to get past these doors. You can also make combat potions to make the boss battles easier.
Below is a table that shows all the different herbs that are available while Dungeoneering and the levels required to clean them. See our Dungeoneering guide for which potion to use to open which doors.
Click the herb image to learn more about it!
Below is a table that shows the different types of potions, the required levels, and necessary ingredients within Dungeoneering. While you will need to get the herbs from killing the creatures of the dungeons or by growing them, the second ingredients and vials can all be bought from the Smuggler, who resides in the starting room. All Dungeoneering Potions begin with a Vial of water mixed with an herb, to which a secondary ingredient is added to create the potion.

Barbarian potions have the exact same effect as their basic potion variant; the only difference is that each dose of a Barbarian potion will also heal you 300 or 600 Life points as well when consumed.
Before you can begin to create Barbarian potions, you will need to speak with Otto Godblessed and complete at least some of Barbarian Training. Within this training, he will teach you about how to obtain the special ingredients necessary for Barbarian Herblore as well as how to decant a 4-dose potion into two 2-dose potions - using a empty vial on any 4-dose potion.
To make create Barbarian potions, you will need:
- 2-dose potion (or a 4-dose and an empty vial)
- Roe or Caviar
Simply add the Roe or Caviar (depending on the potion) to the 2-dose potion and you will get the new Barbarian mix. All the mixes heal 300 or 600 Life points depending on the potion.
Tar is used as bait for the salamanders that you catch with your Hunting skills as well as ammunition if you equip a salamander as a weapon. To make the tar, you will need:
- Herb for the type of tar that you want to make
- 15 Swamp tar
- Pestle and mortar (toolbelt works)
Use the herb with swamp tar to automatically grind the herb and mix them together. See the table below for tar combinations.
Tar | Level | Experience | Bait/Ammunition For... | Combine
Base | Herb | ||||
Guam tar |
19 | 30 | Swamp Lizards | 15 Swamp Tar |

To grind items in Runescape, you will need to purchase a Pestle and mortar from a Herblore Shop. Once obtained, you can use it in your inventory or add it to your tool belt. In most situations, it will function normally on your tool belt. For cases where it will not work, a notice will be provided.
Once you grind an item, like the Unicorn horn, you can add it as your second ingredient for certain potions. See Pestle and mortar for a full list of items that can be ground. Below is a table of items that need to be ground before they can be added to your potions.
Many of the different potion containers used in Herblore can be made instead of being purchased. The sections below will detail the processes of creating them. Note that Juju vial and Vial (Dungeoneering) cannot be created and must be purchased.
Vial, Bomb vial, and Powerburst vial can all be created with 1 Molten glass and a Glassblowing pipe (toolbelt item works). This can either be collected as a monster drop, purchased from the Grand Exchange, or made by combining Soda ash and Bucket of sand on a furnace.
Item | Crafting Level | Experience |
Vial |
33 | 35 |
Bomb vial |
54 | 55 |
Powerburst vial |
54 | 55 |
Crystal, Ogre, and Regular Flasks
While still Glassblowing, and thus needing a Glassblowing pipe, these flasks are not created with Molten glass and can hold up to 6 doses of whatever potion it contains. Note that each type of flask can only hold certain liquids; for example, those held by the Ogre flask cannot be held within the Crystal flask.
Item | Crafting Level | Experience | Materials |
Crystal flask |
89 | 150 | Crystal glass |
Ogre flask |
89 | 1,000 | 10 Robust glass |
Potion flask |
89 | 100 | Robust glass |
To collect Robust glass and Crystal glass you will need to mine Red sandstone and Crystal-flecked sandstone, respectively, then grind it up in a Robust glass machine (found in Prifddinas and Oo'glog). See the table below for the various locations to collect the sandstones. Note that the sandstone blocks will refresh daily upon reset.
Location | Map | Total Sandstone | Requirements |
North of Oo'glog | 50 Red sandstone | Completion of As a First Resort
Ithell | 50 Crystal-flecked sandstone | Completion of Plague's End
East of Sophanem | 25 Red sandstone | Completion of the Elite Desert Achievements
Meilyr (Edimmu Resource dungeon) | 25 Crystal-flecked sandstone | 115 Dungeoneering and completion of Plague's End |
Blessed flask are extremely special flasks which are used to hold up to 80 doses of the Extreme prayer potion. As each dose can restore 565 Prayer points (without boosts), this is a single slot item that can restore up to 45,200 Prayer points. The effects of the potion can be stacked with use of the Holy wrench and the Reverence Auras. As a result, if maximum boosts are used, you can gain up to 51,200 Prayer points from this item (640 points per dose).
To create a Blessed flask, you need 118 Herblore, 96 Crafting - can be boosted or assisted - access to the Wushanko Isles, and completion of Legacy of Seergaze and Plague's End, as well as partial completion of Legends' Quest. If simply assembling the final pieces together, 10,000 Crafting experience is gained. The following items are used to create a Blessed flask:
- Blessed flask shell
- Glorious silvthril chain
- Holy elixir
- Holy water (vial)
- 5 Extreme prayer (4)
- 5 Holy overload potion (6)
- 5 Light core
- 500 Positive energy
Several of the items used to create the final piece also have several steps to create them, these will be described below: Flask shell and chain.
Materials
Below is a checklist of all the materials needed to create a Blessed flask. It is broken down into sections based on the list above. Each section has the items broken down to a point where the items can be purchased on the Grand Exchange System where possible; some items simply cannot be traded. Note that some items, such as the Mud runes will need to be processed before they can be used. Be sure to see the associated item entries if you need assistance creating an item.
Making Glorious silvthril chain
Ability to create this chain requires completion of Legacy of Seergaze and 90 Crafting; 1,000 Crafting experience is gained for making this item. Note that the bars to create this item can be either bought or purchased. Simply use any furnace with a Chain link mould in your inventory or attached to your toolbelt. The interface to create this chain is found within the Silver casting section (under Casting metals and glass).
Several components and steps are needed to make the flask shell. It requires 90 Crafting and awards 171,000 Crafting experience in total. The first 3 of these steps must be completed at a Furnace - Lumbridge, Edgeville (Completion of Easy Varrock Achievements required), Shilo Village (Completion of Shilo Village required), and Port Phasmatys (Completion of Ghosts Ahoy recommended) have the closest furnaces to bank.
None of the components created during these steps are tradeable.
Step | Create | Materials Per Item | Total Materials | Crafting Experience |
Requires |
1 | 400 Blessed glass | - 100 Blessed sand - 3 Soda ash - 3 Crystal-flecked sandstone - 3 Red sandstone |
- 40,000 Blessed sand - 1,200 Soda ash - 1,200 Crystal-flecked sandstone - 1,200 Red sandstone |

2 | 10 Blessed molten glass (azure) |
- 20 Blessed glass - 5 Sapphire bolt tips - 25 Mithril stone spirit - 25 Dark animica stone spirit |

10,500 | 80 Crafting |
3 | 10 Blessed molten glass (golden) |
- 20 Blessed glass - 5 Hydrix bolt tips - 25 Gold stone spirit - 25 Luminite stone spirit |
- 200 Blessed glass - 50 Hydrix bolt tips - 250 Gold stone spirit - 250 Luminite stone spirit |
10,500 | 80 Crafting |
4 | Blessed flask shell | - 10 Blessed molten glass (azure) - 10 Blessed molten glass (golden) - 100 Necrite stone spirit - 100 Phasmatite stone spirit - 250 Alaea sea salt - 5,000 Harmonic dust |
10,000 | 90 Crafting |
Once you have created everything, gather the items in your intevntory.
- Blessed flask shell
- Glorious silvthril chain
- Holy elixir
- Holy water (vial)
- 5 Extreme prayer (4)
- 5 Holy overload potion (6)
- 5 Light core
- 500 Positive energy
You will then be able to click any of the glass pieces to begin crafting the Flask. Keep in mind that you can either boost or be assisted to complete the flask itself. Once it is created, you can use 80 (or fewer) doses of Extreme prayer on the flask to fill it. Be aware that vials will only be used if the entire thing will fit. As a result, attempting to use 27 Extreme prayer (3) will not work; only 26 will be used and the flask will be 2 doses short of completely full. Note that using the vials on the flask will consume the Vial.
Prayer restoring potions will replenish a greater amount of points depending upon your Prayer level. The tables below show how much each potion will restore at your level. Please note that these potions cannot raise your Prayer beyond its normal limit.
Rates below can be increased via use of Holy wrench and/or Reverence aura (any tier).
The potions in the table below restore the following amount of Prayer when consumed; all values are rounded to the nearest whole number. Note that the Super prayer renewal potion, Overload salve, Supreme overload salve, and Elder overload salve also regenerate points over time (See lower table).
