Each rock type in Runescape has a durability level. Durability is the amount of damage that needs to be done to a rock for the player to gain an ore. Durability works in a similar fashion to how hit points work for monsters. Every time the pickaxe hits the rock it causes damage. This damage is taken away from the durability of the rock. Once the durability hits zero the player gets the ore. Each ore has a specific durability required to gain an ore these levels are listed in the Rocks table.
While mining a bar will appear above the players head. Initially the bar will be dark blue but as damage is done it turns to a light blue. The light blue is the total amount of damage done to a rock. When the whole bar turns light blue it means that 100% damage has been done and the ore is given to the player. The picture below has an example of the process (click the image to open the animation).
Damage done to a rock is based on multiple things including: mining level, strength level, pickaxe, penetration level, hardness of the rock, and potentially critical bonus damage.
For each swing of the players mining level is added to the damage, for instance 50 mining adds 50 damage to the swing. For the players strength level only 1/10 is added as damage, so 50 strength would add 5 damage to the swing (strength level/10 then rounded down to nearest whole number).
Each pickaxe has a damage range, for example, a Bronze pickaxe has a damage range of 3-8 but a Dragon pickaxe has a damage range of 33-93. On each swing of the pickaxe an amount of damage, within the range of the pickaxe, is randomly chosen and used to calculate damage. For a list of pickaxes and their damage see the Pickaxe table.
Each rock has a hardness level which acts as a reduction to the amount of damage done to a rock. Each pickaxe has a penetration level that is used to counteract the hardness level of a rock. To calculate the portion of the damage in relation to hardness and penetration first step is subtracting the hardness of rock from the penetration level. For instance a Dragon pickaxe has a penetration of 105 and Runite ore has a hardness of 75 (105-75= 30). In this case the penetration is higher than the rock hardness so the pickaxe dose an additional 30 damage. If the Dragon pickaxe was used on Drakolith which has a hardness of 105 (105-105=0) there would be no additional damage. If the player was to use an Adamant pickaxe, with a penetration value of 50 instead, on Runite ore the calculation would come up with negative damage (50-75= -25). In this circumstance the hardness of the rock decreases total damage done by the pickaxe by 25. If the player uses a low level pickaxe on a higher level rock it is possible that the damage calculation could be zero or negative. If this happens no damage is done to the rock and the game gives a message stating "Your weak pickaxe is unable to chip away at the rock".
Occasionally, while mining, a player will deal a critical hit. These hits deal additional damage based on the players mining level not rock type. The chance of a critical hit is based upon the rock type and mining level and can be seen in this table.
Mining level | Critical hit bonus | Mining level | Critical hit bonus | Mining level | Critical hit bonus | Mining level | Critical hit bonus | |||
1 | 5 | 22 | 30 | 44 | 55 | 74 | 80 | |||

Upon reaching level 15 Mining, Energetic Mining or Stamina, is unlocked. Clicking on a rock to mine it will increase the stamina to 100%. For each swing after the stamina is decreased by 10% down to a possible 0%. At any point you can click the rock to increase the stamina back to 100%.
Stamina increases the damage per swing that is done to the rock based upon the percent stamina remaining. Because stamina increases damage it also increases the experience earned by a proportional amount. Due to how stamina works as it decreases experience also decreases by a small amount when stamina is between 1-99%. Once stamina hits 0% damage will be reduced to 20% as a penalty for AFK mining. To counteract this a Perfect juju mining potion and stone spirits can be used each time a stone spirit is consumed it replenishes the stamina also.
There are two ways to check what your stamina is. The first way is to look at the color of sparks coming off of the rock as it is hit. Green sparks indicate 100% stamina, white sparks indicate 1-99% stamina, and no sparks 0% stamina. An example of the spark colors is in the table below.
The second way is to turn on the stamina bar in the settings menu found here:
In the picture below (click it for an animation) the yellow/dark blue bar is the stamina bar. When stamina is at 100% it shows all yellow and at 0% shows all (dark)blue.
To maintain a 100% stamina, to get the best damage and experience rates, a click on the rock is required every 4 game ticks or 2.4 seconds (spam clicking does work).
Stamina % | Bonus damage per swing |
Spark Color | Example |
100 | +25% | Green | |
1-99 | +12.5% | White | |
0 | 0 | No sparks |
Rockertunities, Critical hits, and Double ore
Rockertunities, Critical hits, and Double ore chance provide players benefits while mining. Since damage and experience are linked, rockertunites and critical hits increase damage and experience, while double ore provides additional ores upon gaining an ore. The first important thing to know is that rockertunites and double ore affects only apply to core rocks (critical hits affect all rocks but increased chances of critical hits only applies to core rocks). Core rocks are the rock types that are needed to make Concentrated alloy bars.Rockertunities are a chance for a nearby rock of the same type being mined to provide additional damage for one hit. While mining, with every hit there is a chance that a rock will become a rockertunity. When this happens it will "glow" yellow, see picture below. Since the damage done to a rock does not reset when changing rocks, you can switch to the rockertunity rock and gain 4-6 times additional damage for the first swing on the rockertunity rock (the Magic golem outfit can increase it to 7 times damage). The additional damage increases experience and ores gained per hour. A rockertunity can not spawn on a rock currently being mined and is player exclusive, other players will not see it. It is possible to deal a critical hit on a rockertunity swing and doing so will use both multipliers to calculate damage. The rockertunity multiplier is dependent upon the rock type and mining level and is shown in the table below.
There is a 10% chance on any swing of a pick that a critical hit will happen. Critical hits increase the damage done to a rock. Based upon the rock type and mining level the critical hit chance can increase to 20%-30%. The chart below shows the rock types and mining levels needed for increased critical hit chance.
Likewise, the chance for double ore is based upon the rock type and mining damage. When under a certain mining level there is a zero percent chance of getting double ore. Upon leveling above certain points it is possible to raise the chance to 5% or 10%. The table below provides the levels required.

By default, you will begin with a 5% chance of obtaining a geode each time you obtain an ore, however, as your Mining level increases, you will have a higher chance of obtaining a geode. The table below show what mining levels increase geode chance and what type of geode is possible from each rock type.

Stone spirits have 2 uses. The first use is when an ore is received while mining a stone spirit will be consumed to provide an additional ore (no extra experience is gained) allowing for double ore to be mined in half the time it would normally take. The second use is to help with AFK mining. Once stamina hits 0% damage will be reduced to 20% as a penalty for AFK mining. To counteract this a Perfect juju mining potion and stone spirits can be used each time a stone spirit is consumed it replenishes the stamina also. There are stone spirits available for each of the core rocks that provide ore.

Ore boxes store ores and allow for the player to carry larger amounts of ores at a time. There are multiple levels of ore boxes, as the level increases they hold higher levels ores. The table below shows which ores can be stored in each ore box. The initial quantity of ores that can be stored in the ore box is 100 of each ore. Completion of the Family Crest is required to use the ore box for silver or gold ore.
The capacity of the ore box increases by 20 ores as the players mining level increases (excluding silver and gold ores). This increase is not dependent on the level of ore box. For example, level 7 Mining increases the storage of Tin and Copper to 120 whether a Bronze ore box or a Elder rune ore box is used. The table below lists the level at which each ore type increases capacity. The increase of each level ore is associated with the highest level of ore each box can hold. For example, Iron ore capacity increases at level 18 and is the highest ore held in an Iron ore box, whereas, Mithril ore capacity increases at level 37 and is the highest ore held in a Mithril ore box.
Completing the achievement "Everything is Oresome" grants a further increase in capacity by 20 for a total of 140 of each ore (excluding silver and gold ores).
Completing the achievement "Everything is Still Oresome" grants a further increase in capacity by 10 for a total of 150 of each ore (excluding silver and gold ores).

In the Shooting Star Distractions and Diversions, you hunt the surface for fallen meteorites. By using a telescope in the study of a player owned house, you may predict where the next star in going to land. Once you have spotted the star, you can start mining it. While mining you will receive mining experience and Stardust. When you have mined it down to its core, a Star sprite will be released. Talk to this creature to exchange your stardust for a reward. Star sprites can only reward you once per day, and you can only carry or have in the bank a maximum of 200 Stardust at any time.
Requirements: Plague's End quest and 89 Mining.
Seren stones are found in the Elf City of Prifddinas in the Trahaearn sector. These stones are much like the rocks found in the Living rock cavern and contain more than one ore each. When you mine then you will gain Corrupted ore, this ore is stackable meaning you do not have to bank. After 70 ore has been mined from a stone it will fall through a trapdoor and a new stone will quickly replace it. You will gain 296.7 xp per successful mining attempt, or 426.7 xp if the Voice of Seren is affecting the trahaearn sector. After you have mined your first 100 Corrupted ore you will gain the title 'of the Trahaearn', this title is a requirement for the Completionist cape. The only use for Corrupted ore is to smelt it for 150 Smithing xp.
If you have completed the King of the Dwarves quest, then you now have access to the Lava Flow Mine. Your job is to keep the plant running at all costs. It is located in the east of Keldagrim. Once you arrive speak to Foreman Jaak and ask him how you can help out.
The mine is made up of four channels of lava, split into eight sections each. The lava, however, is at melting point, so if it cools, a crusty layer will be formed on top of it. Your aim is to mine this crust away. To aid you, Foreman Jaak can tell you which channel the current blockage is in, but you'll have to find out the particular segment for yourself by checking the flow gauges that run into them.
You're free to mine ANY segment at any time, as any crust mining keeps the lava flowing, but you'll get more XP if you mine segments with lower flow rates, as shown in the table below.
Flow rate | XP Per Crust Mine |
100% | 50 |
90% | 60 |
80% | 70 |
70% | 80 |
60% | 90 |
50% | 100 |
That's not all though. While mining, you may come across the following distractions and diversions:
- Boiler breakages:
When the chaos dwarves attacked, they broke a number of the boilers, which sometimes overheat. You will need a Smithing level of between 70 and 90 to combat this, and a hammer. If you forget the hammer, there is a spawn near the Mine entrance. Multiple people fixing the boilers will fix it quicker, however, you will not earn any more or less experience. - Finding gems:
As with regular mining, there's a chance that you may find some precious gems while mining the crust! - TzHaar hero and lava monster:
If you slow down the lava monster down long enough for the TzHaar hero to catch up with it, everyone in the mine will have double the chance of finding gems for the next 10 minutes! - Possessed pickaxe:
Defeat the possessed pickaxe of a dwarven spirit in combat and the ancestor will 'add his mining spirit' to your own pickaxe for 10 minutes, giving you a 10% Mining XP boost. - Liquid Gold Nymph:
If the Liqid Gold Nymph decides to visit you, she will offer you pieces of a golden mining outfit each time she appears. When you have a completed outfit, she'll instead offer you either some Mining XP or the chance to gild a pickaxe you have either equipped or in your inventory. Should you wish to remove the gilding, Foreman Jaak can do just this. Note:The Inferno Adze and Sacred Clay pickaxes cannot be gilded - Lava Geyser:
After completing Birthright of the Dwarves, a lava geyser may pop up randomly in any of the segments. You must cool the geyser down using water or ice spells and, after it has solidified, you must mine it. The geyser offers a chance to receive an Imcando pickaxe fragment which is used, along with a Gilded dragon pickaxe, to create the Imcando pickaxe. If you already have an Imcando pickaxe in your inventory, it will be recharged fully.
Rewards
Each piece of the golden mining outfit gives you a boost to any Mining XP you earn. The more parts of the set you wear, the more of a boost you'll acquire. By wearing the whole set, you can gain a maximum boost of 5%. The boosts for each individual item are shown in the table below:
Item | XP Boost |
Golden mining boots | 1% |
Golden mining gloves | 1% |
Golden mining helmet | 1% |
Golden mining trousers | 1% |
Golden mining top | 1% |
Note: The Golden mining helmet can also be worn to enter the Arzinian gold mine. Also, if you already have the full set of Golden mining armor, and already have your pickaxe gilded, you can still obtain a further reward from the Nymph: ask her if she has anything other than gold - you will get "Mining advice" which means 2500 Mining XP!
While training the Dungeoneering skill, you will occasionally see different types of rocks that you can mine. The ores that you receive can be smelted and smithed into various weapons and armours. For more information on everything you can smith, please refer to our Smithing guide.
