This guide is to help you with castle wars. as you may have guessed. Some people like it and some don't, but it was an interesting addition to Runescape. and one which I am sure was a good one.

Castle wars has a basic principle. You capture the enemies standard and place it in your holder and score a point. The team with the most points wins. The games last 20 minutes each. When a game is finished there is a 5 minute wait before the next one starts. A common question is "If I die do I lose anything?" The answer is NO.

There are two teams, both taking from the Runescape Gods. When you enter the arena you can choose from 3 portals. Zamorak (red), Saradomin (blue) and Guthix (green). If you enter the Guthix portal then you are placed in a random team. The guthix portal teleports you to whichever team has less players, Saradomin or Zamorak. The Zamorak is red. Saradomin is blue. If you are on the winning team then you get 2 castle wars tickets. If both teams tie, then everyone receives one ticket. In addition, you may turn into a bunny, rabbit, sheep, or imp inside the waiting lobby by wearing a god item (not armour) into the portal; this may not always work.

The Arena

Castle wars has two bases, each consisting of 5 floors: An underground, a ground floor, a first floor etc.

Underground

As you may have noticed on the first, there is the part of the main base and the boundaries of the fort. The boundaries are ideal for rangers and mages to destroy oncoming attackers. People on the outside can use climbing ropes to get up if the door is shut - climbing ropes can be obtained from the tables on the ground floor.

Also on the fort boundaries is the fort's catapult. This is loaded with boulders and fired by setting coordinates. The maximum is 30 height and 30 width. You can only go up and left. This cannon can be destroyed simply by attacking it.

Equipment

Having mentioned the ground floor it may be a good idea to move onto that. The tables hold a wide variety of items, all of which have their different uses in the game:

Item Use
Bronze Pickaxe Mining the rocks in the underground
Tool kit Fixing the catapult when it has been destroyed, and to fix doors
Bandages Heal 10% of your hitpoints and 30% of your run energy, and can be used very quickly. You can also heal teammates.
Explosive Potion Used for clearing underground rocks and barricades (warning, will hurt if dropped), and can be used to blow up catapult as well. Explosive Potion will always hit 15 if dropped.
Barricade Blocks enemies off, maximum of 10 per team at any time
Bucket of water Used to put out a flaming barricade or catapult
Tinderbox Lights up barricades, can be used to set catapult on fire
Rock Ammo for catapult
Climbing Rope Climbing up fort walls

Getting around

To get from one base to another there are four possible routes. One is underground as you already know. The other three are located on this map:

Castle Wars Map

  • Set of stepping stones 1
  • Set of stepping stones 2
  • Straight down the middle (also has ladders down to underground)

Capturing the standard

So, you have managed to get across to the other base and get the standard? Very good, but that's only half the job, you still need to get it back to your base. Before attempting to capture the enemy's standard, the following is advised:

  • Prayer
  • At least 2 Explosive Potions or a Tinderbox
  • Lots of bandages
  • At least 70% energy (Bandages will increase this by 30% when used)

If you have these then you should get back safely, but be warned, you will be under very heavy fire from a lot of people! The best way to go is underground or the stepping stones. If you are quick on the stepping stones then you will lose your attackers (works a treat for me).

What does it all mean?

Turning into creatures

When you go into one of the portals in castlewars you will change into a different creature for every God depending on what you're wearing. When you go into a portal, if you are wearing an item that is a different God from the one who's portal you are going in, you will turn into different creatures.

You will change back to human when you start the game or leave the waiting room, however.
