Introduction

There are many different currencies in the world of Runescape. This guide will help you understand where to use and how to obtain each and every one.

Coins

Coins

Description

Coins are still the most widely accepted currency used in Runescape. The gold coin is the staple of the Runescape economy and is used by players and npcs alike. The two alchemy spells do, in fact, turn items into coins. Although there is one spell that turns bones into bananas, I am sorry to say that bananas are not considered a currency in Runescape.

Where to get them

Coins are found all over the place. Almost every kind of monster in the game drops different amounts of coins. There are several spawn points where coins appear on the ground, spread throughout Runescape. You can also get coins by selling items to most shops, and to other players. There are several quests and random events that also award coins. For more information on how to get Coins, check out the Guide to making Money.

Where to use them

Coins are likewise used all over the place. Many quests require coins. Coins are also the main currency used when buying items from shops and players almost everywhere in Runescape. I recommend you check out the Types of Shops and Where to Find Them guide for examples of where to use coins.

TokKul

TokKul

Description

Tokkul is a relatively new currency, used primarily in the Tzhaar city, located under the volcano in Karamja. In fact, the Tzhaar city runs exclusively on Tokkul, and will not accept coins. The Tokkul are round and similar to coins, except Tokkul is made out of a hard obsidian stone, rather than gold. Tokkul can not be traded with other players.

Where to get them

Tokkul can be acquired several ways, but only in Tzhaar. You can kill most of the npc's that wander the city for Tokkul, or sell items to the shops. You also have the option of a couple mini-games located in Tzhaar.

The Fight Pits is a good place to earn Tokkul, by being the last one standing in an all out, every man, woman and child for themselves, royal rumble. However, if you're not a very high level, and if the pit has several players, being the last to survive can be difficult.

A more sure fire way to get Tokkul is the Fight Caves. Unlike the Fight Pits, you are not competing against other players, but rather monsters. Also, you do not have to reach the end to collect Tokkul. If you die, you re-appear outside, with full health, prayer, and a number of Tokkul that reflects how long you lasted in the caves.

Where to use them

There aren't very many places to use Tokkul; however, some of the items aren't found elsewhere, such as the obsidian cape, and the Toktz-ket-xil which is a well sought after shield. For more information of where to use them and what you can get, check out the Tzhaar City Guide and the Types of Shops and Where to Find Them guide.

Trading Sticks

Trading Sticks

Description

Trading Sticks were introduced with the Tai Bwo Wannai Clean Up mini-game. These are used primarily in the Tai Bwo Wannai Village area, but are acquired in various places around Karamja. Trading Sticks can be traded with other players.

Where to get them

The Trading Sticks are acquired pretty much all over Karamja. A lot of the npcs on the island drop them in various amounts, but also by doing the Tai Bwo Wannai Clean Up. As you cut light, medium, or dense brush, you accumulate Tai Bwo Favor from the village residents, who will repay you in Trading Sticks. Another way to obtain Trading Sticks is to mine the gem rocks in Shilo Village and sell the cut semi-precious gems to the store in Tai Bwo Wannai Village. This can be quicker than trying to gain favor from the village residents.

Where to use them

The Trading Sticks are used just around the Tai Bwo Wannai Village. They can be exchanged for various items that are available only in the area, such as the villager clothing, and machetes. For more information on where to use them and what you can get, check out the Tai Bwo Wannai Village Guide and the Types of Shops and Where to Find Them guide.

Ecto-Tokens

Ecto-Tokens

Description

Ecto-tokens have been in the game for a while. They don't have many uses, but a couple of their uses are very good, and the process that you use to get them gives an even greater reward. Ecto-tokens can not be traded with other players.

Where to get them

There is only one way to get Ecto-Tokens which is to worship the Ectofuntus. While it is not necessary to do the Ghosts Ahoy quest to get Ecto-tokens, it will make the process much easier. However, the Restless Ghost and Priest in Peril quests are needed to even get to the Ectofuntus. Check out the Ectofuntus Worship section near the bottom of the Prayer Skill Guide for information on how to get Ecto-tokens. You will also be gaining 4 times the prayer experience per bone used than if you normally buried them. As a result, most people get a large collection of Ecto-tokens sitting in their bank.

Where to use them

There are a couple uses for Ecto-Tokens during the Ghosts Ahoy quest, but after that, there isn't much use at all. Unless you need the bolt racks, then the only real good use for the Ecto-Tokens is buying pots of yeast from the brewery located below the bar in Port Phasmatys. The cost here is only 5 Ecto-Tokens per pot of yeast, which would cost 25 gold coins in Keldagrim. This results in a huge savings of coin, and a good use for all of those Ecto-Tokens you've been saving up. I recommend checking out the Brewing Guide for more information on this.

Castle Wars Tickets, Archery Tickets, Agility Tickets

Tickets

Description

While these are technically not considered currency, I thought they should have an honorable mention since they spend a lot like currency. These tickets are given as a reward for performing various tasks. Castle Wars Tickets, and Agility Tickets can not be traded with other players; however, Archery Tickets can be traded.

Where to get them

Castle Wars Tickets are awarded for being on the winning team, or, to a lesser extent, trying in Castle Wars. Archery Tickets are awarded for completing the competition inside the Ranging Guild. The Agility Tickets are awarded for tagging pillars in the Brimhaven Agility Arena.

Where to use them

The tickets are used in the same area's that they were awarded in. In the case of the Castle Wars and Archery tickets, you can buy gear related to each for the tickets. In the case of the Agility tickets, you can buy more agility experience, or a couple herbs that are not available anywhere else, used for agility potions.

Pizazz Points

Pizazz hat

Description

Pizazz points are a very recent addition to Runescape. They are awarded and spent at the Mage Training area, just north of the hospital inside the Dueling Arena. These provide a good reward to go with all the magic training experience you will receive inside the area, and can be spent on some unique items. There are four kinds of pizazz points; Telekinetic, Alchemist, Enchantment, and Graveyard. They are not tradable, and while they do not appear as items in your inventory or bank, they can be dropped or lost by losing the Pizazz Hat, which keeps count of your current points.

Where to get them

You receive Pizazz points by participating in one of the four magic training arenas. In the telekinetic arena, you move a statue around a maze by pulling it towards you with tele-grab. In the alchemist arena, you can either low alc or high alc items found in the cupboards. In the enchantment arena, you enchant the four various shapes into orbs using any of the enchantment spells. In the graveyard arena, you collect bones and convert them to banana's using the Bones to Bananas spell.

Where to use them

Upstairs of the main area is a guardian who will trade items for your points. Please note that he asks for a certain number of each kind of Pizazz points for an item, so you need to have the required amount of each to buy an item. Items range from wands which must be bought in succession from cheapest to best, to the new Bones to Peaches spell, and even a new colorful set of magic robes.
