This is a brief guide of how the marathons work and the routes they take.

Part of the fun of these races is doing them for the first time and not knowing where you will be going. Consider trying the races by yourself first before looking through this. Starting after this sentence, consider everything else spoiler warning-ed.

==========

When

Marathons are announced through the global announcement system to all worlds. To see this message, your Game chat must be set to "On." There are announcements for 1 hour, 30 minutes, 15 minutes, 5 minutes, 1 minute, and when the race starts. As of today, it is still advised to log in to the world early as there can be extremely long queues to log into the world at the 15 minute mark. This will likely die down as the days progress. Due to the mass amount of people in one location, you will be lagging. On some worlds, the server struggles to keep things running smoothly and the countdown will be delayed (ie - It will say 5 minutes left but might take 15 minutes).

What

You will be racing. This involves a lot of running. Teleporting is allowed. When the race starts, all the checkpoints will spawn. You must run through/near each checkpoint in order. A yellow arrow on your minimap will guide you to the next checkpoint location. While you are racing with other people, unless it is a Jagex run marathon, you are only running for time and will not be able to tell what place you received unless you compare times.

The checkpoints will stick around in the game for approximately 1 hour after the race has started. If you want to avoid the rush, wait about 15-30 minutes until after the race has started before continuing. In my opinion it won't be as much fun if you wait because you have nobody to race against or compare times with after, but if you want less lag, by all means!

Courses

There are three different courses: Varrock, Morytania (members only), and Edgeville (members only). Click on a name of the course below to view a map of every checkpoint (approximate locations).

Varrock - 15 checkpoints - Start: South of Varrock Lumber Yard by the statue
Morytania - 18 checkpoints - Start: Near the steps at Fenkenstrain's Castle.
Edgeville - 15 checkpoints - Start: At the Edgeville Lodestone (Course is located in the Wilderness).

Detailed Routes

Here I will list one possibility of how to best complete the course. If better methods are posted, this portion will be updated. If you don't have a teleport method listed, substitue it with whatever else you may have available to get you close to the next location.

Use your Explorer's ring to recharge run energy when you aren't near any musicians. I have yet to do this on a free world, but from looking at a map I would rest at the musicians near lumbridge (when running to (3)), Falador (when running to (8)), and Edgeville Monastery (when running to (10)), and try to save at least 2 if not all three charges of my ring for 11-END.

Those would work in member worlds, yes. My note was about the F2P race, though. In a member world, the best run restoring thing would be ooglog pool followed by spirit terrorbird.

I believe I have found a slightly quicker way to do the Morytania race. Once I have had time to complete the race, I will update here if it works. It should shave off at least 20 seconds if not more.

For the Members Varrock course, I believe using the Wicked hood's teleports for the Water altar (immediately after passing through (4)) and possibly the Body altar (immediately after passing through (8)) might shave off enough time to get under 4 minutes. Unfortunately when I attempted that a minute ago, I apparently teleported before it registered I had gone through a checkpoint, so my time would have been screwed up and now I can't test until the hood resets. I don't see how the hood can help in any way with Edgeville or Morytania. Runecrafting teletabs might work as well and be quicker since an interface doesn't need to pop up.

The Morytania race starts in less than an hour now, so I'll be able to test out my new alteration to my route. Will report back once I know more.

I updated my best time for the Edgeville race. I managed to do (5) correctly this run, I changed (12) to use Jennica's ring, and I changed (13) to use a glory instead of running south.

So I improved my Morytania time by over a minute with the slightly improved method and broke into the 5 minute range! :D Grand seed pod for two locations was the biggest key for that improvement.

Just did the Members Varrock marathon again with my runecrafting tabs. First race was 4 minutes 2 seconds; a 7 second improvement. I was so close to breaking 4 minutes that I had to run again. Second attempt was 4 minutes even. Not good enough! One last time being more precise about how quickly I teleport and the exact location I run to... 3 MINUTES 51 SECONDS!!!! W000000000000T!

My first post has been updated to reflect the improved route.
